Visiting Cai Beo ancient fishing village in Cat Ba

For those who have been to Cat Ba, it is an unforgettable experience in the fishing village of Cai Beo (also known as fishing village), one of the largest floating village in Vietnam. The fishing village has about 300 households living mainly by fishing and aquaculture. If you have not been to Cat Ba yet, let’s travel visit Cai Beo fishing village in Cat Ba with Hanoi travel bus!

The village is located in the middle of the limestone valley, running along the north-south direction of 2B Ben Beo (Cat Ba town, Cat Hai district). Cai Beo fishing village is located at latitude 20o43’8 ” and 107o3’2 “East (about 1.5 km from the center of town) with an average height of about 4 meters compared to the sea level. According to the study of Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, Cai Beo is the most important archaeological site in the coastal and northeastern Vietnam. According to Mr. Nguyen Khac Su – Professor of Vietnam Institute of Archeology, the leader of study group has done surveys of excavation this fishing village 4 times.

For the first time, in 1938, the French archaeologist Mr. M.Colani discovered that Beo was the ancient cultural cradle of Vietnam. On that basis, the Institute of Archeology has conducted the investigation and soon discovered the cradle of the sea culture.

In 1981, the Museum of Vietnamese History carried out the second excavation in this place. Although the excavation area is only 78m2, they found many rare artifacts in two consecutive stages of development are pre – Ha Long period and Ha Long.

In 1986, the third excavation was carried out. Archaeologists have found nearly 180 different stone tools including grinding tools, 9 pieces of porous pottery, 18 pieces of hardened pottery, 93 pieces of thick coarse pottery, 11 vertebrae of fish sea, 88 head of sea fish, 6 pieces of animal bone …After analyzing these basis, they have given a conclusion that Cai Beo fishing village consists of two stages of culture: pre-Ha Long period and Ha Long culture period.

The fourth excavation was carried out on 5/12/2006 by many prestigious scientists, after the excavation in early January in 2007; they have collected from 10 holes with 137 stone artifacts, 1,424 pieces of pottery and 568 specimens of animal and shell mollusks. Analysis shows that the collection of relics are made of granite and ceramic rope twisted raw, fish bone, clam shell, large size oyster shell …

From the evidences that scientists have collected, they show that Cai Beo is home to the ancient fishermen. This is the largest and the most ancient fishing village in Vietnam. The analysis also shows that about 7,000 years ago, the people of Cai Beo village lived mainly on sea, fishing and catching oysters and scallop. They have maintained that life for 4,500 years until now.

Cai Beo fishing village is quite wide, about 18,000m2. Residents settled in Cai Beo developed through the ages from the Middle Stone Age to the Bronze Age. Hunting, gathering, fishing and agricultural settlement are considered the development of Cai Beo culture to Ha Long culture. The first inhabitants of Cai Beo are of indigenous origin, most likely the descendants of the ancient Hoa Binh – Bac Son culture. Cai Beo culture has developed into the culture of Ha Long Bronze in the Northeast region of Vietnam.

Additionally, Cai Beo has thick Strata layers (average of 3m) and is perfectly preserved. On this stratum, we can see the whole change of the marine environment of the Northeast region. From the entire scientific basis, we can confirm that the Cai Beo ancient paddle village is really a museum of sea culture in Vietnam.
